Introduction to PulsingPulsing is a movement-based passive bodywork. Movements of stretching, lifting, jiggling, shaking, rotating and swinging are applied within a matrix of soft and persistent rhythmic rocking of a prone or supine body from which no effort is demanded. The message conveyed is that life can be easier. Thus Pulsing is a delight to give and a treat to receive. Unlike much natural and complementary therapy, Pulsing is not an alternative treatment modality geared to the relief of specific symptoms. On the contrary it is a playful mode of holistic self-experiencing, easily taking the receiver beyond average restricted levels of functioning towards the extra, the exceptional and even the ecstatic. This is a synergistic bodywork, adding the power of movement to the power of touch, and at the imaginal level producing a multimodal sensory experience. Singly both touch and movement can stimulate the self-healing capacity of the body. Together they do so even more. The regressive aspect of rocking recreates a body memory of what is usually the least conflicted period of our lives, the time when we generally enjoyed the maximum security, the prenatal time inside mother's body. Due to the part played by rhythmic movement in enabling early developmental transitions rocking also has a progressive aspect, preparing the adult for upcoming life transitions. Pulsing has a special contribution to make to the broad trend among physical, natural and complementary therapies towards a healing or 'wholing' closure of the Cartesian body/mind split (with the many unhappy consequences of this split in everyday life, in therapy, in science and in politics). The increasing popularity of massage therapies suggests a growing appreciation of the importance for adults of being regularly touched in a caring way - in a way that is not sexual, not violent and not medical, these being other dynamics that commonly define the context of being touched. While massage strokes generally have a nurturing element the addition of rocking amplifies the nurturance potential. Rocking has an inherently self comforting and self-caressing value. With good sensations in their bodies people tend to feel more human and more at home with themselves, with the world being lived as a more benign place. Pulsing then can be recommended for 1) stressed people who need to relax, 2) people out of touch with their interior bodyspace and the messages from within, 3) people interested in their self development through a mode of bodily movement, 4) people searching for an undemanding sensuous experience. A training
group may be attended on a single weekend basis or on a qualifying track
of 4 weekends, completion of which leads to certification by Pulsing
Associates.
