This workshop is important because

it is designed to do full justice to the complexity of anger. It is packed with tried and tested procedures for getting a handle on anger. A guiding assumption is that we need to take responsibility for our anger and be able to choose how we communicate it. To do this requires first hand bodily knowledge of it's workings and this workshop is designed to provide exactly that.

A unique and different workshop

that will help you develop a grounded and practical knowledge of anger, rage and hostility. These are commonly lived as difficult emotions and accordingly are ready candidates for various modes of discounting and inflation. You will be spared three common and erroneous (but seductive) takes on anger - naive catharsis, New Age no-no and corporate positivism. The choice to express, contain or even transform your anger will be emphasised. How to relate to other people's anger, aggression and violence will also be addressed.

This workshop offers you

opportunities to practice the expression of anger in an assertive mode as an alternative to exploding in a damaging hurtful way or imploding into passive aggression. Cultivating a variety of expressive capacities will be balanced by a focus on anger management, both of your own and other's anger. Experiential learning during the workshop will be reinforced by copious handouts for your ongoing use.

You will learn by means of

both verbal and non-verbal, both quiet and noisy exercises. Workshop methods will include movement, visualisation, writing, drawing, expressive roleplay, somatic techniques, structured anger discharge and group discussions.

You will develop skills for

a broad range of situations involving anger. Many of the exercises will have specific applications. e.g.

  • for dealing with criticism
  • for the expression of resentments
  • for deflating catastrophic fantasies
  • for use in intimate relationships
  • for moving out of passive aggressive behaviour
  • for controlling your own aggressive and abusive behaviour
  • for managing your responses to other's aggressive and violent behaviour and ensuring your safety

You will learn about

in the course of this full and varied day:

  • anger's part in illness
  • anger as a substitute emotion
  • the use of calming self-talk
  • differentiating rage from anger
  • defusing anger escalating out of control
  • meditative transformation of angry energy
  • applications from assertiveness training
  • the cultural/social implications of the anger-aggression-violence nexus

This workshop delivers it's title: Anger, All Angles.

Sensations Series

Anger, All Angles can be attended on its own or in a series of six theme based workshops. Details of any of the other Sensations series workshops are available on this website. The others are Sexualities and Suppressions; Facing up to Shame; Body Image, Discovery and Change; Shock and Stress; and The Rainbow of Desire. The unifying element of these workshops will be an exploration of the phenomena of your personal bodily experience. Participants will be helped to recall and communicate the exact sensations associated with their experience. The charge of the themes will be grounded and contained through carefully structured exercises.

Attending a Sensations series workshop may serve as an introduction to work in one of several ongoing analytical body psychotherapy groups. Further details of weekly ongoing groups and weekend groups are available on this website. Current or former members of these groups may also attend the theme workshops in order to focus on specific concerns surfaced/surfacing in that setting.

To discuss booking or if you have any queries please ring Guy Gladstone on 020 7272 6672 or email.
